Alright. You know how this works. I post every once in awhile when I feel like it, and I hear something that I really want to talk about. Would be cool if I did this more regularly, but we’ll see.

So some new J. Cole came out yesterday. “LOST ONES.” It’s a dope song, and probably will be on the album in the fall. Unfortunately, it was an unauthorized leak, so it was taken off most blogs. But you can still hear it on youtube, if you haven’t had the chance yet. Anyways, this is a great song. THIS is the J. Cole I love. The lyrics, the great storytelling, and the real heart that comes through the words. The beat is pretty simple. Nice, but lets the words speak for themselves. And the words are powerful. Listen to it and tell me I’m wrong.

THIS is the J. Cole I hope I hear on the album. Who Dat? and some of those other songs are nice, but this is the kind of J. Cole music that I love. “Lost Ones” kind of reminds me of my first favorite J. Cole song, “Lights Please.” It’s got the same masterful storytelling knack that got me excited about J in the first place. Also, both songs use a relationship as the setting, but both hint at deeper issues, and use that setting to talk about those issues without sounding corny or preachy. They’re really interesting songs, “Lost Ones” a bit more powerful just because of its subject matter. But I’m telling you, this is getting me even more excited about the album. His last mixtape was nice, but not as nice as I was expecting. I hope he’s been saving the joints like this for the full album.

And I like the way he spoke through both people on “Lost Ones.” It made the song even more balanced, thoughtful, and provoking. Lets him show both sides, the concerns and anxieties of both, without picking a side until he says his piece in the last verse. That whole back and forth between the man and the woman brought to mind another classic hip hop song, “He Say She Say.” Man, I really loved that song when it came out. Loved the whole album actually. But that song was nice. How each verse subtly changed depending on perspective, some may say it was lazy writing, but I thought it was good music. And the way they talk to each other during the hook? Damn, that song was/is classic hip hop IYAM.

Finally, just because I feel like talking about more good music, this song has a few similarities to Blu’s “Good Life.” The first verses are especially similar as both rappers take similar approaches to the topic. I love that Blu song, and Exile’s production, but as of today, I like J. Cole’s new cut better. That’s just a deep, touching song. The lyrics are on point throughout and the song only gets better as it goes on. “Good Life” is still great, and that first verse has some really nice lines, but as a total product, J. Cole’s song is just more powerful.

Well anyways, that’s what I think. Which of these songs do you like the best?

just went out for a walk

So I finished my last essay of the quarter today. That was awesome. But I also got that 24 page term paper back. It wasn’t good. Damn it. Writing the whole thing in 3 days probably contributed to its terribleness. But whatever, it’s over.

So once i finished the paper, I was so happy I just wanted to get out of here. And it was really, really nice outside. So I just went on a walk…for four hours. It was awesome. I walked to the city.

This City

This City

It was great just walking around with nothing to do and nothing to worry about. I went to a dollar store to buy a pair of socks because one of my socks had a hole in it and my foot was about to start bleeding (that’s not normal is it?).

What were you expecting? A picture of a bloody foot? That would be disgusting. By the way, that baby looks creepy. Like its got the devils eyes or something.

It was a nice pair of socks. Then on the way back I saw this Mexican restaurant that only sold tamales. It seemed weird, but its tamales had to be real good. There’s no way that restaurant would survive if all it sold was bad tamales. Long story short, I bought two tamales. They were DELICIOUS.

Then I walked back home. I love taking long walks for some reason. I don’t know why, but it really relaxes me. Plus, its decent exercise. You should try it sometime.

What am I listening to? I’m glad you asked. This is a really cool song I just found on Flawless Hustle. It’s a real personal song, and The Native Soul said this about it:

“Ok. I’m saying it now. This is my true essence; a song with a story and a purpose. I decided to write something about insecurity, pain, and the real shit that alot of people unfortunately have to deal with in life. I recognize I’ve lived a pretty scott-free existence up until now, with a few nicks and scratches along the way, but I’m always reminded in tough times about how much more difficult it could be. You never truly know what lies behind the eyes of a stranger, or even a close friend for that matter, so assumption should never be a part of your vocabulary or your lifestyle. It’s also very hazardous to think you understand anyone or anything fully, because there’s always something new to learn from a situation or a person. I put Kenna on the hook since it was my inspiration behind writing this song, and I hope people like it. I’ve included the lyrics below and also made the track available for download. Partake!”

Check the song out.

see ya next time.

Almost there…

Alright I wrote a 10 page essay this weekend. Now I just have to finish a 6 page essay by tomorrow. After that, I’m basically done w/ this stuff. I have one last test on Friday, but that’s so far away, so it’s like it’s not even real. I’ll be able to relax after I finish this essay. Break is so close, I can feel it.

I’ve noticed that I almost always just talk about my essays on here. That’s because these essays have been my entire life for the last two weeks. I can’t wait til I’m done with them. Then I won’t have to write an essay ever again… until probably the middle of next quarter, which is really only like 3 weeks away. Damn it I hate essays…

Anways, here’s a new song that got leaked this weekend. It’s the new theme song for Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. It’s Ghostface Killah and DOOM, so you know it’s gonna be awesome. I’m not sure if it’s called Chinatown Wars or Renegade, but either way, just listen to it.

it’s not my favorite DOOM or Ghostface song, but it’s always cool when they’re working together. By the way, I CAN’T WAIT for DOOM’s next cd. It’ll be released in like two weeks, and I pre-ordered it awhile ago. I’ve stayed away from the leaked tracks online because I wanna be surprised when I listen to the cd. I’ll be sure to post a review of it on here once I get it.

See ya. Gotta finish that essay…

Another lame weekend.

I got a 16 page essay due next week. Damn it, this is just like last weekend. Thankfully next weekend will be spring break, and this cycle of essays will end.

By the way, I’m gonna study abroad in China in the fall. It’s gonna be awesome. I kinda also wanted to study abroad in Japan because I think Japan is cooler. Also, I can speak a little Japanese, kinda. I can’t speak any Chinese, so I don’t know how I’ll get around in China. But anyways, only the Chinese program fits in w/ my major, so the study abroad office only approved me for that one. So I don’t really have a choice in the matter anymore. I’m going to China.

Jackie Chan = Coolest Thing from China

Jackie Chan = Coolest Thing from China

So I’ll be sure to post videos and pictures and stuff while I’m there, but that’s still months away.

Here’s some sweet music I’ve been listening to lately:

First one is Invincible feat. Tiombe Lockhart (courtesy of Fresh Selects). I heard a song by Invincible last year and it was nice. This song is also awesome, so give it a listen. Her voice, flow, lyrics gel w/ the beat like crazy. A real strong track.

Ropes- Invincible feat. Tiombe Lockhart

Next song you might actually hear on the radio. Off of The-Dream’s new album which sounds pretty nice. You might remember him from last year’s “Falsetto.” Apparently, he’s written some hits for lots of different R&B artists, so the guy’s talented. This song in particular, I like. Can’t get the chorus outta my head.

When they ask about JB, you say put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down

When they say does he make that blog real sweet? you say put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down

Are his videos any good or wack? you say put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down

Well, is he better than crack? you say put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down, put it down….

So I finished that paper. I had to give a 15 minute presentation about it today. I was so tired after writing it, I didn’t bother to make a powerpoint presentation or any presentation really… Not a good idea. Pretty much everyone else had a powerpoint. I tried to wing it, but it wasn’t good. The presentation sucked. But whatever, its done. This is the first Monday in awhile where I don’t have something due the next day. It’s awesome.

amazing photo. It’s from Juan Buhler’s photoblog.

click the pic, and check out his blog. lots of other cool stuff on there.

also, Brother Ali’s new album came out. DX gave it a good review, and his last ones were good, so this one’s probably good too. Check out this song, if you like it, check out the rest of the cd then buy it.

Too busy…

I don’t think I’m gonna make a video today. Just too busy, and I still haven’t started that 20 page essay. So I’ll probably just make one next week when I have more time.

Anyways, this is what I’ve been listening to lately. It’s a free album by Kayo using John Mayer samples. Apparently it’s been out for more than a month, but I didn’t hear about it til recently. I’m not a huge John Mayer fan, but this music is good. Give it a listen. Download the whole album here.

oh by the way, just saw some other cool Kanye-designed shoes. They are from Louis Vuitton, so I definitely can’t afford these.

F My Life.

Seems like I’ve been hearing people say that a lot lately. I’ve been pretty stressed lately, but honestly my life’s not too bad. If it wasn’t for the 20 page paper I got due next week, it wouldn’t be that bad at all.

But anyways, I got some positive responses about the election video I posted yesterday. So thanks for the support, I’m glad you like it. Remember to vote for Josh.

Here’s a cool song I heard today (courtesy of WYDUBLOG). It’s got C Rayz Walz, someone I’ve liked for awhile and Slug, who is also really talented. The beat and hook are pretty great too. Check it out.

Also, some pictures of the new Air Yeezy, Kanye’s nike shoe that just came out. They look pretty sweet if you ask me, too bad I can’t afford them.
